Insecurity was prevalent in those days, the “mine is bigger than yours” mentality generated mostly from the record companies on a per unit sales basis; ego. The Beatles and Elvis outsold everyone up to this point having claimed over 1 billion unit sales, the best-selling music artists of all time.

Jerry was in the process of working on his own concert film production at that time and it was an important opportunity for him to witness the work of Scorcese, both as a student of film and a director himself.

Richard Manuel had suffered serious injuries in a recent accident which added fuel to the “let’s retire” and become what we once were, “a studio band!”.

And yes, Robbie was the Jerry of this Band! however, not so much as a lead singer.
